The photochemical degradation of phenanthrene in aqueous media has been investigated. First, the degradation of phenanthrene was studied in the presence of a test compound, benzyl alcohol, as an electron acceptor. Second, the hydroxyl radical was tested as an acceptor. Third, the photodegradation of phenanthrene was studied in media containing t-BuOH and cyclohexanol as cosolvents. The degradation of phenanthrene is less effective in the presence of benzyl alcohol. The results point to a parallel degradation with phenanthrene. The hydroxyl radical may accept electron transfer from phenanthrene to benzyl alcohol. No effect of t-BuOH or cyclohexanol is observed on the degradation of phenanthrene in water.
